Pringle Tree Park

One of the most notable historic landmarks is the Pringle Tree Park; the current park marks the first permanent settlement west of the Alleghenies in Virginia, settled by Samuel and John Pringle in 1764. The brothers lived in a hollowed Sycamore tree for 3 years and eventually began a permanent settlement with other emigrants.  The burial site of Samuel Pringle and his wife Charity Pringle can be found at Hampton Cemetary.

Today, the 3rd generation Sycamore tree stands where the Pringle brothers once lived.

Pringle Tree Park is open to the public from May 1 to Nov. 1 and is maintained by the Upshur County Commission. Facilities include a boat launching ramp, toilets, parking area, picnic facilities, open field areas for athletics, and play ground equipment. Overnight camping is not permitted.

Buckhannon, West Virginia 26201

Several years ago Lewis Anderson, at the time a county deputy, began the first bluegrass gathering at the county jail. From there over a period of a few years it moved around. From the jailhouse it moved to Lester Kendrick’s music store on Main Street, to an industrial building where Lowes now sits, to Lewis County, and now back in Buckhannon. This energetic, live performance is great fun!
