POLINA, 2017, Russia & France, 108 mins, Unrated (PG-13?)

Growing up in modern-day Russia, and trained from an early age by rigorous, perfectionist Professor Bojinski, Polina is a promising classic dancer. However, just as she is about to join the prestigious Bolchoï Ballet, she discovers contemporary dance and begins to question her classical training and artistic trajectory. Leaving Russia behind, Polina moves to France to pursue contemporary dance troupes, and explore her true artistic passion.

When I first learned of this film, it appeared to be a rigorous documentary about the extreme world of classical dance, exposing the many years to commitment and sacrifice a dancer must make to (maybe) become recognized in the field. As I previewed the film, prior to selecting it as a LASCAUX feature, I was pleased to find it not to be a film about dancers, for dancers, but rather one for all artists who struggle to find his or her own voice in a highly competitive climate. It is an engaging drama with many layers beyond the technique and pressure of the dance studio. As I endeavor with my own creative career to stay true to my inner vision, I found this gorgeous film to be very touching.
