MLK/FBI is the first film to uncover the extent of the FBI’s surveillance and harassment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Based on newly discovered and declassified files, utilizing a trove of documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and unsealed by the National Archives, as well as revelatory restored footage, the documentary explores the government’s history of targeting Black activists, and the contested meaning behind some of our most cherished ideals. This astonishing and tragic story, from over 50 years ago, sears with relevance as our 2021 political moment of unrest continues to unfold.
“How should we think about his legacy? The answers aren’t easy, but MLK/FBI doesn’t try to pretend they are; it’s a film that leaves you thinking.” – Alissa Wilkinson, Vox
“[I]t’s a useful reminder not just that this American hero was a widely vilified figure during his lifetime but also that he accomplished everything he did despite nonstop resistance from intelligence agencies, the media, and the public alike.” – A.A. Dowd, AV Club
“A finely tuned, perfectly edited film.” – Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
