Many of you have probably seen Martin Scorsese’s THE LAST WALTZ sometime during the past 40 years since its original release in 1978. Given our musically-themed films of this past year (Concert For George, Bad Reputation, Blaze, Horn From The Heart, and The King), it seemed appropriate to finish the year out with one more landmark musical celebration.

On Thanksgiving Day in 1976, the legendary rock group THE BAND staged a massive farewell concert in San Francisco featuring special guest appearances from many of their famous friends and past collaborators. Its lineup featured more than a dozen of music’s biggest names, including Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, and The Staple Singers. Additionally, the set list covered a diversity of genres from folk and rock to blues and gospel, featuring new versions of such beloved songs as “Mannish Boy” performed by Muddy Waters, “Helpless” sung by Neil Young with help from Joni Mitchell, and “Caravan” by Van Morrison. The Band played many of its own hits too, including “Up on Cripple Creek,” “Ophelia” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” THE LAST WALTZ started as a concert, but it became a celebration. Interspersed with candid discussions between director Scorsese and members of THE BAND, this film has often been called “the greatest rock concert movie ever made – and maybe the best rock movie, period.”
