Before Summer Ends…
We still have a month of summer left, but the weather is already changing with cool morning & evenings. Before jumping into Fall, we want to savor the last parts of summer in Buckhannon and Upshur County, so here’s some of our favorites:
Gather up Farm Fresh Tomatoes from Fish Hawk Market or the local Farmer’s Market. Getting fruit & veggies straight from the garden has so much more value than picking up a few from a big box store. The smell is amazing, and taste oh so yummy!
Tent camping with your family – Audra State Park is rustic & a true authentic picture of West Virginia’s Wild and Wonderful. September is the perfect month to have a weekend camping trip while the days are still warm enough to enjoy the river, and a camp fire roasting smores will warm up the cool nights.
Burgers on the grill (and maybe an ice cold beer) is probably the most iconic summer activity. We like to get our burgers from A.F. Wendlings, where they’re made fresh!

Top 4 Fall Activities You HAVE To Do
Pumpkin Patch – Spooky Nights & Hayrides – Fall Drives – M2Bravo Zombies – Football Games
With cooler, crisp air, everyone is ready for the spectacular fall colors and cozy evenings enjoying the season. We’ve put together the top 4 things you need to do this Fall:
Pick your own pumpkin at Green Acres Farm in Rock Cave! Not only will you have the freshest pumpkin for your front porch, you can find your way through the Haunted Corn Maze, take a Hayride along the farm, and try some tasty fall treats.
Go on a Hayride or a Spooky Night Tour of the WV Wildlife Center. There’s no better place to see West Virginia’s native animals, and things look a lot different at night
Drive the country to see some of West Virginia’s best fall foliage.
Nothing says Fall like a hometown Football Game! Cheer on the Buccaneers and the Wesleyan Bobcats when they play at home.

3 Best Muskie Photos
After working on a new website showing the great stuff you can do in Buckhannon, we realized we didn’t have photos of people fishing. We had photos of fish, of the river, of really cool kayaks in the water, but no people.
But ‘people’ is what we’re all about… We want people to enjoy Buckhannon, and we want to share their experiences with other people. So we set out on Facebook to ask for some killer muskie fishing photos (with people), and the result was amazing!
Within a day, we saw that muskie fishing on the Buckhannon River really is for everyone – kids, women & men. Everyone had a smile on their face, a big muskie on the line, and was happy to share their story.
The Buckhannon River has a 6-mile stretch of world-class muskie fishing. People travel from all over the country to fish for our muskie. Thanks to everyone who takes advantage of the Buckhannon River and all it has to offer!

If Buildings Could Talk
Have you heard of the two brothers who lived in a sycamore tree for 3 years? That’s exactly how Buckhannon got its start!
From the Pringle Brothers creating the first permanent settlement along the Buckhannon River in 1764 to current day, Buckhannon has thrived the past 250+ years. A walk from one end of Main Street to the other, you’ll see 3 blocks of intricate structures built in the late 1800s, full of stories. Create Buckhannon – a local volunteer group – are working to revive those old stories, with historic plaques placed with some of the most notable buildings. Here are a few stories you’ll see along the way….
One of the oldest on Buckhannon’s Main Street, the current Chamber & Visitor Center building was completed in 1891 and was home to a dry goods store and printing shop. During recent renovation, a brick with the date ‘1892’ was found decoratively carved beside a 2nd story window.
The Reger Building, now home of Main Street Antiques, once was used as a boarding – house on the second story, and home of the popular Liberty Lunch in the 1940’s.
There’s a total of 12+ historic markers throughout the Main Street area – if you’re willing to venture further out, you’ll find some remarkable sites like Fidler’s Mill, Civil War sites and more.

Stars, Stripes and Strawberries
Stars, Stripes & Strawberries is the theme for the 77th Annual WV Strawberry Festival. As Buckhannon gets ready with strawberries in every window, fresh flowers being planted and strawberry treats being featured in local menus, we’ve stopped to reflect on the theme.
Our small town loves our red, white and blue and this summer you will see flags waving on front porches, in front of our beautiful courthouse and along our streets. Those stars and stripes remind us of the real stars in our town, those who volunteer for military service, our fire department workers, and people with giving hearts who make things happen in our community. Hats off to all who serve in our churches, schools and with local activities! That’s part of what makes a BIG difference in our small town filled with flowers, delicious foods and welcoming hospitality.
Won’t you come see us soon?

Spring Flowers
We know it’s still dreary outside. And we get that all of West Virginia can still get a foot+ of snow in February & March. But we also know this…. Spring will be here soon.
Birds chirping on a sunny morning, garden preparation, spring break trips, and flowers. So many flowers! People in Buckhannon get especially excited when the downtown flowers start blooming. Buckhannon’s own horticulturist and his team bring life to our small town. From the very minute the spring tulips bloom, colors pop along Main Street, the Riverwalk and flower beds scattered throughout town.
We hope you travel the area, stop & appreciate Buckhannon’s flowers this Spring!
Early Events | May 11th – May 14th Official Dates | May 15th – May 19th
Now in the 78th year, the West Virginia Strawberry Festival has proven itself worthy of recognition year after year. For people who have grown up in Buckhannon, and grown up going downtown for the Festival, they’ve never gotten tired of the events & exhibits, even if some of them are 78 years old! We dug around some articles to see just what the early Strawberry Festival was like, and compare it to what the Festival has transitioned to in 2019.
What hasn’t changed…. …is a desire for fresh, local West Virginia strawberries. If you’re a local, you’ve heard the debate that the annual event is too early (the 3rd week of May) for strawberries to be ripe. And to a point, that’s true…. But West Virginia farmers are utilizing high tunnels to start the Strawberry Season early. Be sure to stop by the Chamber & Visitors Center at 14 East Main Street on May 17th & 18th to get a pint of REAL West Virginia berries.
…is the crowning of the Strawberry Queen. The Coronation is a ceremonial event for all Strawberry Festival royalty.
…is the dedication of volunteers to make it all happen. We might overlook the minor (and major) details that is required to coordinate an event that spans from May 11th – May 19th, but it’s a tremendous time commitment from local folks who want to be part of continuing the Strawberry tradition in Buckhannon.
What has changed… …are the entertainers brought to town each year for Friday & Saturday night’s Party Gras! Main Street clears the vehicles and opens for multiple stages of musical performances, entertainment and vendors.
…are horses. Lots of horses. The 2013 premiere of the Horse & Carriage Parade became an immediately favorite for Strawberry Festival enthusiasts. This year will boast nearly 100 horses trotting down Strawberry Lane on May 11th.
… is BBQ and Beer! Turn up the heat at the inaugural Strawberry BBQ Cook-Off! A new Beer Garden will be located across from the food vendors, too.
That’s not everything – be sure to see the Full Schedule of Eventsfor this exciting family tradition!

Festival Fridays | 2019
Summer is finally ‘official’ with the kick-off of Festival Fridays in Buckhannon! Now in its 8th season, Festival Fridays has become a much anticipated event to help jump start summer weekends.
Festival Fridays will happen each & every Friday starting May 31st – August 23rd, from 5 PM – 8:30 PM. Locals and visitors come to Jawbone Park to pick their spot on the lawn with their chairs or blankets and listen to the live music, browse the vendor booths and enjoy the warm, community atmosphere. This has quickly become an all-time favorite of Buckhannon’s special events. Folks are always eager to see the band line-up (see below) while grabbing some fresh produce from local farmers. Artists and local businesses display and sell their craft. Lawn games are rolled out to keep the kids entertained. There’s always a variety of food options for dinner or snacks.
But aside from all of the amazing things offered at Festival Fridays, the single most remarkable part of the weekly festival is community. People gather Friday evenings – getting away from their rushed lives and taking time to sit outdoors and talk with one another. It’s a special type of connection, and something that makes Buckhannon a special type of town.

A Photographer’s Dream
If you are looking for some of the sweet spots in our area to test your photography skills, here are a few of our photo dream locations!
West Virginia Wesleyan College
Located right in the heart of our charming small town, WVWC boasts beautiful Georgian architecture with both historic and modern buildings. But the big fountain on Camden Avenue and the Wesley Chapel are the photo draws! The classic photo of the flowing fountain with the chapel in the backdrop is a must post for your Instagram account. The smaller fountain on College Avenue is lit with various colors at night. Most miss the small statuette of Katherine Johnson of “Hidden Figures” fame who studied at Wesleyan and achieved NASA success. Find that in front of the science hall. July is a great time to find those beautiful orange lilies blooming on campus to frame your perfect shot.
Waterfall on the Little Kanawha
Located beside Fidler’s Mill in the southern end of Upshur County in the community of Arlington, this is one of our favorite spots to pull out the camera. Located at the bend in the river, the falls feed a favorite swimming spot between the rocks. Especially picturesque in the fall, both the Mill and the falls can be photographed from several angles. Find the little path down to the river just beside the mill wheel for river level shots. You will also find a path leading through the woods that will put you at river level. In the winter, downstream you will find a hill frozen with water cascades If you’ve gotten this far, you might as well keep traveling to Holly River State Park for more waterfall locations. Be sure to include family and friends for a neat Facebook post.
Covered Bridges
Upshur County is the perfect center location as a jumping point to four area covered bridges. In Lewis County near Walkersville, the Big Red Covered Bridge is often surrounded by summer wildflowers. One of the remaining 16 covered bridges in West Virginia, this one is especially pretty and there is plenty of space to pull off the road to get a photo from various angles. Also, the Simpson Creek and Fletcher Covered Bridges are located in neighboring Harrison County in close distance from major highways. Simpson Creek Bridge is surrounded by hundreds of buttercups in the spring. Another neighboring county, Barbour, boasts the Philippi Covered Bridge, a two laner still in operation. Go up stream to the modern bridge and shoot back toward the historic bridge. Reflections in the water will enhance your photo. Old fashioned charm will show through in each picture of these historic bridges!

Summer Isn’t Over
Before we all jump into the Fall Season with pumpkin spice *everything*, let’s savor the end of Summer! We’ve put together some local favorites of how to enjoy those long, hot days while they last!
Nothing is more nostalgic of summer than a swim at the local river – Audra State Park is a Buckhannon favorite for the scenic beauty, natural swimming holes, plus a fantastic place to for families to camp. Reservations can be made online, too!
Use the local trails! The Riverwalk is a popular spot since it’s a simple (and flat) 3 mile loop that has scenes of the Buckhannon River. You’ll always see people walking, running and riding bikes – and often see squirrels, ducks, and birds. For something a bit more strenuous, the Upshur County Trails network is quickly becoming a hot-spot for mountain biking and trail running! And don’t forget about the river trails, either! With multiple access points, the Buckhannon River is perfect for a calm paddle.
A summer day isn’t complete without a meal, and Buckhannon is gaining alot of recognition for some fabulous local eats! Search local restaurants, and try a new place – you won’t be sorry! Events are still in full swing; check our Calendar of Events to find something!
Enjoy Summer while it lasts! ☀️

Guys Trip
Even men need a little break! We’ve put together a few trip ideas just for the guys.
Hunting & Fishing
West Virginia is called Wild & Wonderful for a reason – our natural resources! We have 2 publichunting locations, secluded trout streams, a nationally recognized muskie fishing hole and quiet scenic views of the rolling hills. If fishing, venture out on your own or schedule a guided trip with Day Trippin Adventures. The Upshur County Youth Camp is a favorite spot for hunters who want quick access to outdoor adventures.
Cabins
Sometimes the best trip is a simple trip. Find a secluded cabin, complete with a fire pit and outdoor grilling station. Whether it’s on the riverfront or tucked away in the woods, a private cabin is the perfect way to escape everyday stresses.
Brews, BBQ, Wings & Burgers
Kick back and relax with a craft beer from Stone Tower Brews, or try mouth-watering Miss Piggies BBQ. If you want to find a true hidden treaure, look no further than the WhistleStop Bar & Grill for out-of-this-world Wings & Burgers. Hillbilly Grill is an all-time favorite, too. There are plenty of other food options!

Best Drive
There’s nothing more iconic and relaxing as a simple drive. And now, more than ever, we all need something simple & relaxing! And BONUS – it’s a socially distanced activity to do solo or with your family.
This drive has the best views in Upshur County, winding through the rural parts of our southern community. The rolling hills and fields along the way are beautiful in all seasons. So choose a podcast or family playlist, pack some snacks and hit the road! My family gets excited to choose their favorite junk-food snacks to eat along the way! Be sure your gas tank is full. This entire drive is about 1.5 – 2 hours long. Find a map of the drive, too!
From Buckhannon, start driving on Route 20 South. Along Route 20, you’ll pass places like Sam’s Pizzaand Ron Hinkle Glass. Keep your eyes open for signs for the WV Wildlife Center. You’ll turn left onto Alexander Road and drive for 9 – 10 miles until the next turn. This part of the drive takes you through places like ‘horse-shoe turn’ (you’ll know it once you see it!), West Virginia hills and old farms.
After the Alexander Road, veer right onto Zion / Selbyville Road. You’ll transition onto a side county road. Watch the views to the right and left, as the elevation has been rising and you’ll see amazing sights of the mountains for miles. Once you reach Pleasant Dale Church & Cemetary, you’ll drop down the mountain to the tiny community of Selbyville; when you reach the bottom of the hill, cross the bridge and turn left. This area is the proud home of the Upshur County Youth Camp. If a private camp isn’t in session, you can drive into the Youth Camp to walk along the river. After you pass the Upshur County Youth Camp, the paved road ends and you’ll be on a gravel road, climbing the mountain. You might wonder if this part of the drive is the right way (it is) as you drive up the steep gravel road and go through several ‘kiss your @$$’ turns. Remember, it’s all part of the fun! Once at the top of the mountain, you’ll go through the Brooks Hill community with James W. Curry Park. This is a good spot for your kids to play on the playground or have a picnic lunch.
At the end of the gravel road, you’ll come to a stop sign, where you’ll turn left and be back onto Alexander Road. Take the road back past the WV Wildlife Center, then turn right onto Route 20 South towards Buckhannon.
Fall leaves are still hanging on to the trees, but we promise this drive has spectacular views year-round. Other than the sights, the time spent enjoying West Virginia’s Wild & Wonderful is well worth the drive.

From our friends at My Buckhannon….. Here are three delightful trips in Buckhannon!
Nestled in the heart of West Virginia, Upshur County is the perfect place to explore the Mountain State’s renowned fall foliage.
Experience Upshur County this fall as the gently rolling hills explode into everyone’s favorite fall colors. You do not want to miss this opportunity to get outside in the crisp, mountain air around Buckhannon.
Here are three day-trip ideas to add to your travel wish-list:
Trip 1: Hear the leaves crunch underneath your hiking boots at the Upshur County Recreation Park’s extensive trails system, but be sure to keep an eye out for mountain bikers who are also enjoying the outdoors! Several miles of trails wind through a compact area that surrounds the recreation park and Buckhannon-Upshur High school. After a hike in the crisp air, stop by Stone Tower Brews on Main Street in Buckhannon for a warm Campfire Mocha or a refreshing West Virginia craft beer.
Trip 2: Take a relaxing stroll at the Buckhannon River Walk with your friends, family or your furry friend! Your pup may want to stop by the adjacent Buckhannon Dog Park for a game of fetch and fun with fellow pups. Located adjacent to the beautiful West Virginia Wesleyan College campus, the River Walk meanders in a 1.5 mile loop along the Buckhannon River. After your stroll, order a mouth-watering calzone at the delicious C.J. Maggie’s Restaurant before heading home.
Trip 3: As cooler days are upon us, bundle up and head to Stonecoal Lake for a picnic, kayaking or fishing! The Stonecoal Lake Wildlife Management Area boasts 2,985 total acres of forests and a serene 550 acre lake (no power boats). You will probably work up an appetite after a day on the water, so stop by Hillbilly Grill for dinner on your way back to town.
If your quick day-trip turns into an all-day excursion, that’s okay! Buckhannon has a variety of places for you to rest your head. Check out our tourism website for a full list of hotels, motels, inns and cabins for you and your travel companions to relax for the evening. We hope you stay around Buckhannon for a while because there’s so much to see and do here this fall!
Visit the Upshur County Visitors Center Facebook page to follow the fall foliage travel across the county. Post a photo on Facebook with #BuckhannonFall in the caption. Also, be sure to include the date and location of the photo so viewers can track the changes of the leaves.
Download the WV Tourism Digital Fall Inspiration Guide and Fall Foliage Map to track the change of the leaves across the Mountain State. While you’re there, don’t forget to sign-up for weekly updates about the fall foliage via email!
Happy fall, y’all!

Life As a Wesleyan Student
My name is Brooke Hamrick and I am a current Sophomore Service Scholar at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and my service site is the Upshur County Visitors Center. WVWC has felt like home to me since I first visited the campus. I truly felt welcomed home by this community and still do to this day. One of my favorite things about Wesleyan is how pretty the campus looks when the seasons change.
West Virginia Wesleyan College is one of Upshur County’s biggest attractions. Students from all over the world have come to further their education at WVWC over the years. Bobcat Entertainment is always planning fun activities for their students to do. From things like the famous Big Bingo Event to Tye Dying T-shirts in the Oval, WVWC will have something fun for everyone to be a part of!
One of my favorite events I have attended is bowling with my friends at Woody’s Bowling Center. Whenever the weather is warm, I love bringing a blanket and some snacks and sitting on the Chapel Lawn with my friends while talking or doing homework. Wesleyan has a beautiful campus with benches and tables for students to sit at and take in all the pretty views while eating with friends or catching up on homework.
Wesleyan opens their doors to everyone and allows a safe and comfortable environment for their students. My college experience here to this point has been exciting, adventurous, and challenging. Wesleyan has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and focus on my personal growth. The professors have the student’s best interest at heart and will always be around to help you with any decision you face. West Virginia Wesleyan College shows me every day why I chose to be a Bobcat.

The aniticipation is growing in Buckhannon to once again celebrate the much loved strawberry! After the cancellation of the 2020 festival, and a mini-festival in 2021, we can’t wait for the full Strawberry Festival experience with parades, a carnival, special exhibits and the best selection of strawberry foods.
Parades | Strawberry Lane begins at the intersection of Camden Avenue and Marion Street, then flows to Main Street, ending at the Charles Gibson Library. Strawberry Festival attendees line the streets with chairs to watch 4 different parades. Kicking off the Strawberry Festival on May 14th is the Horse & Carriage Parade where you can catch antique horse-drawn carriages, horse teams and riders. A hometown favorite, the Junior Royalty Parade is a fun parade full of floats and community groups and will be held on May 19th. The Fireman’s Parade might be noisy, but is a fun way to recognize our firefighters and first responders who serve Upshur County, as well as our neighboring areas. Wrapping up the festivities on May 21st is the Grand Feature Paradethat boasts bands, entertainment groups, extravagent floats and our Strawberry Festival Royalty.
Strawberries & Food| You can’t celebrate the WV Strawberry Festival without eating all the food. Like, all the food. Find food vendors set up at Jawbone Park serving up corndogs, funnel cakes, gyros, french fries, and other carnival styled treats. Local restaurants join the fun by featuring special strawberry dishes and drinks all week long, too! And if you’re looking for West Virginia grown strawberries, stop by the Chamber & Visitors Center on Main Street for the Strawberry Marketwhere you can buy pints of fresh strawberries.

Each year feels like a party with a busy week of fun. You can be a part of the contests & exhibits – just find your favorite event and get registered!
